Shining Horse - Equine Guided Learning
Therapeutic Riding

Therapeutic Riding is about the rich sensory experience of being on horseback: feeling the warmth, size, movement and presence of the horse; learning how to move in harmony with the horse; learning to yield trusting the horse to carry us and developing enough confidence that we can contribute to the horse's sense of security.

Our therapeutic approach has benefited a wide variety of clients including young children and adolescents who have been diagnosed with all sorts of conditions including autism, dyspraxia, attention deficit disorder, etc.

Our ethos at Shining Horse is to look to the person beneath the label and work with what we see moment by moment, trusting that each person unfolds according to the dictates of their own rhythm and timing. In short, we follow a client's lead. This is why Therapeutic Riding is part of a whole process which includes spending time outside with our horses. Most of the exercises in Equine Guided Learning are carried out on the ground. We also offer therapeutic riding for those who may benefit from the experience of being on horseback.

Therapeutic riding differs from the sort of riding offered in riding schools. There the emphasis is on teaching the techniques of riding. Therapeutic Riding is not about teaching you how to ride but about giving you an opportunity to have a riding experience.

Clients might first begin a relationship with the horse by spending time with the horse in his stable or paddock. Exercises might include learning how to approach a horse, grooming the horse, learning to lead the horse, learning a horse's likes and dislikes, learning how to mount and then learning how to ask the horse to walk on. The time spent on horseback is only part of the whole experience and process. The exercises that are chosen are dependent on a clients age, motivations, aptitude and developmental process.

Both Sue and J have extensive personal experience with young people and adults who find accessing mainstream services difficult.
